CERN has announced the completion of a supercomputer built in partnership with IBM and Intel.
The $40 billion facility, which has been in the works for the last four years, will be the home of a new supercomputer designed to accelerate and support the world’s most powerful computers.
The facility is to open this year, and will be one of the world a supercomputers will operate in, CERN said.
The project will also include a “deep learning” center and a new research facility.
The building will house several data centres, including the massive CERN-VX facility in Geneva.
The new facility will be called the Advanced Simulation Centre (ASC) and will include the main computational facility, called the Large Hadron Collider, the Large Synchrotron Laser Facility (LSLF), and a large research and development facility.
It will be located on the outskirts of Geneva and was built with money raised from private investors, Cern officials said in a statement.
“The new building will be a truly new and transformative structure for CERN,” said Dr. Guido Raimondi, head of the Large-Scale Instrumentation and Simulation Centre.
“We will be able to accelerate the development of our supercomputational power.
This will not only make CERN a more competitive player in the field of supercomparison, but also in the competition for data storage,” he said.
CERN also announced it is opening a new $10 million research facility, a $30 million supercomputer research facility and a $70 million supercomputer simulation facility.
“It’s been almost two years since the announcement of the new superconducting CERN supercomputer, and the new facilities at CERN have been built and completed,” said CERN Director-General Christophe Bouchard.
“Today we are proud to announce that our new super-computing center is now ready for a new life as a research and simulation facility.”
CERN will also be expanding its research infrastructure in order to meet the increasing demands of the future, said Cern Chief Scientist Dr. Jean-Pierre Delorey.
“At CERN, we are committed to improving the quality of life in our community, and we’re working towards building a new high-performance supercomputer at Cern in 2017,” he added.
“This new facility, for example, will allow us to develop the most advanced machine in our field, as well as support the research of new researchers.
We’re working hard to find a solution to this, and as part of that effort, we’re also introducing a new generation of research centres for the development and demonstration of the latest high-throughput and superconductivity technologies.”
A big win for Cern CERN is also expected to help pave the way for other future supercompositions.
“In 2017, we will launch a super-powerful research facility to support future research, as we need to accelerate our understanding of the physics of the universe,” said Guido Gagnon, head, research division at Cermacool, a company that manages CERN.
“By combining the expertise of the largest supercomPUTs, Cermacs supercomputer and the latest supercomPETS, we’ll be able accelerate the pace of our research.
This is a big win and a great example of what the supercomputer industry is all about.”
